The 1950's and 1960’s were a very distinct and interesting time for clothing.
Many men's coats were modeled after the fighter pilot bomber jackets. Hawaiin shirts appeared because Hawaii had recently become a state. There was also the geeky nerd look of the old days with horn-rim glasses, the surfer look, and the cool cat suit sporting the formal decked out look. Bowling shirts, lettermen sweaters, were also stylish.
Guys seem to participate more often at our oldies gigs than at other costume parties. Oldies attire is easy and can be made simply by rolling up t-shirt sleeves and throwing on jeans. Adding leather, a bomber jacket, slicking back hair, blonde bombshell hair dye, or sporting a bowling shirt is nice. We have seen coorporate parties with teams of guys and gals in bowling shirts. Great for pictures and video!
Don't you just love the dress of women from the 1950's and 1960’s? They wore those full swinging skirts, "I Love Lucy" aprons in the kitchen, pedal pushers (similar to capris), cat glasses, sweaters, scarves, saddle shoes and poodle skirts at sock hops. Stiff full petticoats or pencil skirts and sweaters became the "in". Bullet bras were hot. Hairdos could be seen of flips, beehives, bouffant, ponytails, and curls.
The beatniks, who were poets, musicians, and other artists, wore black turtleneck sweaters or T-shirts with jeans. Other alternative dressers, called “greasers”, wore jeans t-shirts and leather jackets, and greased their hair back similar to the “Fonz” look. Many rolled up their t-shirt sleeves. The movie “Grease” has actors dressed in the fashion of the time. Elvis hair evolved from the late fifties ducktail and graduated to his later 70's sideburns.
Band Diego offers appropriate guest activites for their specialty Sock Hops. Participation is high and the parties rock when the guests and band are in costume. Everyone seems to get into it! Oldies celebrations are a blast from the past for all ages!
Other popular costumes our musicians have worn for celebrations requiring special attire are: hippy dress, 1970's flashy disco clothing, 1980's big hair, wigs, rock look, toga parties, luau beach parties, masquerades, cowboy and square dance, celebrities, historic characters, sport teams, pirate party, movie and TV costumes, cartoon characters, and comic con. Band Diego clients have had some rockin events!
